Bric-a-Brac

I have been collecting a mish-mash of items for as long as I can remember. When I was five, I gathered napkins from every restaurant and special event that my family and I attended. My young self tediously compiled a “napkin scrapbook” and kept the memento on my bookshelf for years. My mother kept the napkin scrapbook as a reminder of my formative years, but I think it is quite an odd collection to keep around.
In college, my obsession with bric-a-brac was satiated with animal-figurines. Owls were by far my favorite, and I lined my bedroom shelves with my spoils from the thrift store. Now in my mid-twenties, my assortment of statues has given way to hats, dresses, shoes, and purses. I never really considered myself a purveyor of vintage until a year or so ago. Although I have worn vintage and thirfted clothes for a decade, Matty poignantly pointed out that I own a variety of dresses that don’t even fit me (as well as vintage children’s clothes. They are so adorable and I would very much like Howard Rabbit to wear them.) I appreciate the construction and design of vintage dresses and hats, which is the main reason that I collect these pieces.  But with three closets and a garage full of pretty things, I think I have reached capacity!
This dress was recently thrifted in Northern California on a day adventure with Miss Ashley. I paired it with my 1950s floral handbag and muted shoes and belt for the daytime. And the hat is a favorite of mine as well. Annalise purchased it at the Alemany Flea Market one rainy Sunday morning. I have since incorporated it into my wardrobe and am dreading the day when she will want it back.

This is a favorite! I love the whole look, especially with the vibrant floral bag you're carrying!

Your collection of vintage is very much like a friend of mine. 2 storage units, an attic, and a garage full of vintage.

The Thriftaholic (Leilani) :

Oddly enough I started out collecting vintage jewelry, purses and knick knacks, it wasn't until my last year in undergrad that I finally looked in the clothing section of the thrift store (and I haven't worn new clothing since)!

I'm super envious of that '50s bag, it's so hard to find vintage bags in a larger size. Looks like it would be perfect for a trip to a flea market.

Lydia :

I looove that hat!!! I need it! I collect keepsakes like napkins to remember special trips or dates with my bf. I keep receipts, brochures, matches, all sorts of little doodads and store them away in cute little boxes.

I really loved reading the story of your napkin scrapbook! That's crazy adorable, and actually sounds like something that a younger me would have done. (My mom glued bits and bobs into scrapbooks for me when I was younger, and they're pretty random! Clippings from magazines and newspapers, pretty rocks I picked up, feathers, etc.) I later progressed to collections of seal figurines and teacups and have now settled on vintage wearables.

Anyways, it's always nice to hear about how other people came to collect vintage. And I bet walking through your three closets and garage would be like falling into Wonderland; I can only imagine all the loveliness you've collected over the years! <3

i love that bag! ah!

Mara :

That dress is gorgeous! And I love the addition of the hat! I'm always too timid to wear vintage hats around, although now that the weather is getting nicer, I might start with wide-brimmed ones for extra protection from the sun.

Anyway, you look beautiful! (And I have this feeling that I might want to steal your collection of owl bric-a-brac. I love owls.)

JazmineKariss :

Such a cute outfit, I absolutely love the dress! And what an interesting hat you have :)

Absolutely love your dress and bag! So, how do you keep track of all that collection? I imagine you must have things separated by what you can and can't wear?
I only collected rocks as a kid, napkins is much more original haha! Since about high school though I purge out my closet every so often but sometimes regret a few things.
