The Graduate

Today is a very special day. After two years of writing and research, I am graduating with a Master's of Arts in Sexuality Studies. I don't usually discuss my "professional life" on the blog, but I am quite proud of my academic accomplishments. When I tell most people that I pursued a graduate degree in Sexuality Studies, I commonly get two responses: 1. inappropriate comments regarding trysts in the sack and 2) looks of bewilderment. For clarification, the mission of the Department of Sexuality Studies is, "to advance multidisciplinary teaching, research, and advocacy in sexuality studies, sexual literary, well-being and social justice." Although the department is interdisciplinary, my work is from a social psychology vantage point and primarily explores the intersections between sexuality, race, and gender. I also was awarded a "Distinguished Achievement Award" for graduate work. I couldn't be more excited for future career prospects!

Since I don't have to wear a cap and gown at my graduation ceremony, I chose this lovely lace dress and paired it with vintage gold accessories. The brooches on my left shoulder are a mama bee and a baby bee (I though they were specially appropriate for Spring). And I made the floral crown from a 1960s candle wreath. I would very much like to wear flowers in my hair everyday!

congratulations!! your "grad" outfit is fantastic! As someone who also pursued graduate degrees (in English lit depts), with emphasis on interdiscipinarity & gender/sexuality related topics, I can totally relate to what you wrote about regarding people (both inside my field and outside academia) misinterpreting me/my research topics! Silly rabbits!

Congratulations! I'd give you a look of jealousy and resentment, because that's one of many things I'd enjoy going to graduate school for. If I had enough money to continuously be enrolled in various schools for the rest of my life, I'd be ecstatic.

Meghan :

aw congratulations Jenny! I didn't know you were so accomplished ;) I almost went into psychology, but didn't, and now I work in a headshop and dream of grad school.

You look soooo pretty, how exciting not to have to wear the baggy sweaty gown! Best wishes and can't wait to see what is next for you <333

Congratulations on the degree, you're so lucky you didn't have to wear a cap and gown, I had to wear THE UGLIEST light gray gown with 'wizard sleeves' for my MFA ceremony last year.

Ah, that's amazing news. I feel like we're kindred spirits in a way as two academics/bloggers both interested in gender, sexuality and race. I can't wait to start my MA. Maybe one day we can sit down over tea and discuss our shared love of vintage clothing and academic pursuits. Congrats!

dusanabotswana :

Congratulations! What you studied sounds like such an important topic in making our world a better place. I know that sounds super cheesy but I really do think we need more people to study, even independently, these issues. Great job on all your hard work & way to celebrate the big day with an adorable outfit!

Emily, Ruby Slipper Journeys :

Beautiful, Jenny! And a belated congratulations, I missed this post before. : )

Caitlin :

adorable outfit! and congratulations!

Lydia :

You look gorgeous, I love that last shot, and congrats!!! I love sex studies. Always something interesting to talk about.

zoƫ, lion heart vintage :

yay! i'm so encouraged to learn of a fellow blogger who has done interdisciplinary gender/sexuality studies! i'm considering doing my BA major in Women's Studies and i also get that blank stare from people when i tell them... it still boggles my mind that sexuality, gender and ethnicity are not commonly considered subjects worthy of studies. i mean, these are only 3 of the most influential aspects of identity for most people! no big deal, right?

haha, anyways it's great to hear of your accomplishments! congrats and pardon my rant! :)
