Transitions

Last Sunday, Annalise and I went to Cafe Altano in Hayes Valley for brunch and mimosas. We talked about life, future plans, and our dreams of opening a brick and mortar store of our own someday. We started Hummingbird Vintage in 2008. Since our first sale at the Indie Mart many years ago, we've daydreamed of starting a little shop in the Bay Area filled with carefully-curated vintage treasures. It's always been difficult for me to balance my two loves: fashion and my pursuit of a PhD. I am applying to PhD programs this Fall, all of which aren't in California. The realization that I may be moving away from San Francisco indefinitely is rather distressing because it means that I won't be opening a vintage store anytime soon. And it is perhaps this anxiety that has also contributed to a change in my fashion choices. I've always loved whimsical pieces, but recently I find myself drawn towards blacks and textures. I would like to incorporate these looks into my wardrobe on a regular basis.

Best wishes with the PhD. I can imagine that would be scary but very exciting at the same time. That black lace dress is such a beautiful piece. I have been looking high and low for a lovely lace dress but no such luck yet. The boots are such a cool standout item!!

Vanessa, Take only Memories :

Woa those boots are amazing!
You can still open a store after you finish your PhD...I don't think there is an age limit on opening a store ;)
I hope everything works out for you!

Rae Veda :

Those boots are just perfect. xo, rv

The Attic People :

Beautiful dress, you look great in black. I hope all goes well with the phd etc...follow your heart!
We sell vintage and work as designers so it can be possible to focus on two things whe the time is right :)

Elegantly Academic :

How awesome are those boots! Good luck with your PhD. It can be a rollercoaster ride at times, but it will be worth it in the end ...

vanda :

Cheray Natalie... :

Good luck with the PhD, that's wonderful that you're pursuing it!! It's always scary to think of moving, but it will be so good I think.
This is probably my favourite outfit of yours ever, the lace black dress and those bold boots! So perfect

Virginie Lavallée Bélanger :

Gorgeous outfit! The dress and the boots make my heart swoon big time!

I'm sure your dream will come true, sometimes our timeline just has to be longer than our patience would like!!

mary van note :

I love this outfit!!! It seems like a lot of us are moving from San Francisco in pursuit of our dreams. It's somewhat inevitable for certain careers. But, you can always move back to SF whenever you want!

Anna :

i love your necklace! and good luck you'll be amazing :) xx

Dresses for Dinner :

I love anything with lace and those boots are amazing. I like the idea of changing up your style to darker more textured pieces. Always a good thing to change it up!

Rebecca :

I can't belive that's a 1940s dress. So lovely. I like how the boots and necklace are a little bit western against the sober black dress, great contrasts. Good luck with PhD things, I'm sure you can still have your store one day as well!

Hannah :

You have the most lust-worthy closet. The dress is perfection. And then the boots on top of it! I die.

Good luck on the PhD! What will you be studying? I'm just entering year 3 myself. For me the hardest part is the emotional aspect. I'm used to working hard, but I wasn't really prepared to work hard and have nothing to show for it! But I suppose it is all a part of the learning process. It's hard, but at the end it will be worth it (...I hope!)

Lucy, Dear Fish :

Your outfits get me every time. Those boots are incredible! I just want to live in your closet!
I know what you mean about trying to balance the different loves in your life...for me, wanting to live in the mountains and ski every day does not really mix well with fashion! I'm sure that as you pursue your PhD you will find a way to incorporate your dreams of owning a brick and mortar store into your life; making vintage store plans while studying for your PhD could be one of the most exciting things! Good luck with everything my dear!

Mara :

Good luck with your PhD! Perhaps you can open up a store after you finish. :) I love that dress!

Amber Blue Bird :

your boots may be the most rad boots I have ever seen...seriously.

Maria Ramona :

if this is any consolation, you're probably better off selling online and at shows while the economy is as bad as it is. right now you can sell with no overhead costs and pursue your other dream in the meantime until the economy improves. :)

This Charming Style :

Good luck with your PhD!! The dress is fabulous, and wow, those boots!xx

TatiannaMaria :

I am in love with your dress, it is absolutely amazing :)
Good luck with your PhD!

Lydia :

Oh. My. God. Those boots!! Those BOOTS!!!

Sarah :

Just thinking of my MA is crazy, so I can only imagine how the PhD application process feels. I feel like life will let you both rock your degrees AND have an incredible store!

As for your current style, I love texture and black, though I've been trying to use color a lot more lately. I like how your boots pop against the dark of your look.

out of order :

those boots and the necklace are such wonderfully astounding accessories with the cool black layered outfit :)

Joey :

Jenni :

Wow, good luck on the PhD applications! I think it'd be pretty tough to run a business and work on your PhD at the same time... I can barely manage to feed myself while working on mine. :) You can always open one later, though.
Also: Awesome boots! This is all.

marion :

JENNY....

The little world of fashion :

Love the boots!
xx

Rebeccak :

Oh good luck the the application process! It sounds like a serious undertaking over there!

I know that feeling - been torn between two (or more!) loves. It is difficult... but better to be stretched than to be bored! I hope one day it all comes together - until then virtual brick and mortar all the way!

Meanz (Koi Story) :

I adore those funky boots and that black lace dress! So pretty!

amberly :

First of all, wonderful song to be listening to :) Secondly, those boots OH MAH GAWD! And thirdly, it is sad to relocate, especially when your future dreams are where you are now, but you will always be able to return home, BECAUSE it is home! Always a place to come back to...

Its unfortunately stylish this time of your life is bringing you to wear black, but I must say - you look mighty fine! The boots add such a pop of color (and hope!) that wherever the road takes you, you can always return home!!

Best of luck with all your endeavors, love! Ph D means mon-AY!

Courtney :

Good luck with the PhD applications. I know how tough it can be, especially during a rocky economy. I did a few years of a PhD program in English and loved it until the coursework part was over :) What subject?
Love the dress and boots.

Michal :

First off, those boots are absolutely fabulous and I really really really wish I could steal them.

Secondly, wow, PhD. That is really awesome and exciting. Good luck with your applications! If you have to move out of SF though you might as well go to somewhere over here on the northeast coast so I can steal your boots. :p

Elizabeth of PrettyNiftyThriftyFashion :

oh that lace dress is just soooooo pretty and those boots are so cool!!!

wardrobeexperience :

omg, i could kill for those boots....
i hope everything works out fine with the phd ...

percentblog :

Being caught between two interests is a tricky place, I'm often caught between my career that I love and my jewelry "business" that I also love. Best of luck as you find ways to satisfy both!

Monique :

Good luck with applying to phd programs, your boots are absolutely fabulous. It's funny how some changes and decisions affect what you wear. Black is a powerful color and you look grounded and beautiful in it.

Jamie Rose :

Those boots are so unique and awesome! I really love that pretty dress too.
