Tomalas Bay

Last weekend, Matthew and I traveled to Tomalas Bay, an estuary located North of San Francisco. We are both particularly fond of oysters, but indulging in this delectable treat is rather infrequent due to its price tag. But as luck may have it, we discovered Tomalas Bay Oyster Company, a farm that specializes in fresh oysters, clams, and mussels. Instead of a traditional oyster bar, you may purchase bundles of 50 shelled oysters directly from the farm and shuck them at your leisure. We spent the day exploring the bay as well as barbecuing near the coast. The sky was a brilliant blue, and washed-up jellyfish and algae lined the beach- all wonderful sights for a rather lazy weekend.

Photobooth

We've enjoyed exploring Photobooth, part gallery and part revival of cameras such as the Polaraid and tintype. Shane O'Neill (my uncle) had an opening party for some of his fashion work on tintype. The images were beautiful, and we enjoyed spending a Friday evening with these lovely ladies.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost

But it was finally clear enough to venture out without an umbrella, and I seized the opportunity to visit one of the local parks near my neighborhood. It was wonderful to see the sun, with the lighting particularly lovely in the later hours of the day. I can't wait for more warm weather and sticking to my resolution of taking my dog to the park more often.

These photographs were taken at Mount Tamalpais, home to shaded old growth Redwood forests and Douglas fir-covered slopes near Alpine Lake. In the light gaps beneath the redwood trees are red alders, California big leaf maples, tanoaks, and Douglas fir. The forest floor is covered in redwood sorrel, ferns, fungi, lichen, duff and debris. The forest was quiet, with only the sound of crunching leaves beneath my feet. Perhaps reminiscent of my summers spent in Occidental, California, I feel most at peace here. Luckily, this woodland is only a short 45 minute drive from my front doorstep.

Being outdoorsy and a bookworm may not seem to make much sense at first, but in fact they go hand in hand. Both are quiet and peaceful. Plus, where else can you loose yourself for hours and find a yourself in a new magical world so different from your every day life? One of my all time favorite books is "Bridge to Terabithia" where the two main characters are able to loose themselves (or find themselves) in the magical mystery of the woods. As much as I love an escape to the wilderness, it's important to stay warm. I was very thankful for the super cozy coat that I borrowed from Isla. It was the perfect thing for exploring the forest and finding my way over the bridge to my own Terabithia.

To the Mountains

A few snapshots from a recent trip to Sierraville, California. The ground should be covered in snow, but the weather was eerily reminiscent of late summer. Visiting the mountains has become a seasonal ritual, with the Sierras being a frequent destination. I look forward to camping and hiking in the next few months during visits to some of my most beloved destinations in California.

For me, this means cozy sweaters and the occasional plaid shirt. This outfit is a weekend favorite of mine, and I wore it while exploring a tiny town just outside of Sebastapol. The town borders the Redwood forest, making it particularly ideal for short day trip. I brought my 1970s avocado green travel tote to shlep around all of my weekend essentials. I always need extra layers in case it gets a bit too cold in the evening. However, I often overpack for such short trips, and my bag is almost too heavy to carry!

On this stretch of road there were numerous areas to park the car and meander down hidden pathways. Some trails lead to dead ends but most of them culminate in breathtaking views of the bay. In all the hustle and bustle of everyday life it's so easy to forget in what a beautiful place I live. I will try to find the time to visit again soon, and bring more sensible shoes for hiking. I hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend.

There is nothing better than a classic ascot blouse. I love pairing this black vintage beauty with a 1960s striped mini skirt for an everyday look. And I can't get enough of a bright coat and accessories for the winter months. And the puppy dog hairclip? I found it in a little shop during an epic thrifting trip in Idaho. We thrifted so many goodies that we had to secure our newfound treasures to the roof of my car for the twenty hour drive back to San Francisco.

Running Wild

In keeping with one of my New Years Resolutions of experimenting with fashion choices I decided to pull these leather and lace boots out from the the depths of my closet. I've had them for over six months but haven't worn them more than twice. This is also the first time wearing my lace dress I got on a shopping trip with Isla to Urban Outfitters during one of their epic 50% off sale sales. I love the ombre effect on the lace and the slightly longer back hem.
Growing up a nature lover, I'm drawn to dress myself in colors and tones found in nature. I'm influenced by seasons and the colors that change with those seasons. In winter, the trees are bare and leaves are left curled and dead on the ground. In a way, the peeling paint and rusty siding of this building is reminiscent of the decaying leaves left over from autumn turning into winter. And yet among all the empty branches, there are bright patches of greenery that can be found all over the city. My necklace of acorns is a symbol of how nature renews itself every year, just as I hope to renew myself in this new year.

The Same Old Song

With the first of the year, I often do a light winter cleaning around my apartment. Last year, Matthew and I made a promise to rid our apartment of distractions. We sold our television (which is a huge distraction for me) and instead invested in additional records to our growing vinyl collection. Whenever I visit thrift stores, I always search the record selection for possibly titles to add to our library. New Order's Substance was the best record I've thrifted since it is rather expensive to buy online, and I also found a few original Beatles records at a garage sale. The hunt continues this year!
Speaking of lucky thrift store finds, I recently discovered this 1960s yellow coat for only $6.00. I haven't had as much time to thrift due to my job. But whenever I have a moment, I find myself traveling to the nearest charity shop.

New Year, New You

It's a new year and a new me, or so I would like to hope. Like many people, with the start of 2012 I've made some resolutions for my future. I'm not looking for a total transformation so I'm trying to keep it realistic. I find that simple, tangible goals are easier for me to stick to. In the next 362 days I'm planning on talking my dog to the park more often, cooking dinner at home a few times a week and experimenting with my fashion choices on a daily basis. Styling up this skirt was a good first challenge since it wasn't something I picked out for myself. I got this little floral number in the mail as part as the swap started by Love Charles Vintage. I can't wait to see what other fun pieces will soon be on our radar. Having an inspiring swap like this will be a great way to help me keep up my fashion goals. A Thing of the Past, A Look to the Future

With the start of every New Year, I always set professional and personal goals. I successfully completed my goals in years past, and I hope to do the same this year (fingers crossed). For me, setting realistic objectives is highly motivating, often pushing me to try new things. Setting such standards prompted me to pursue graduate school in 2009, discover my love for running, and even to start writing this blog with Annalise. What's in store for 2012? Professionally, I would like to continue pursuing my education with a PhD in Psychology. Personally, I would like to take more time just for myself- something that I often forget to do.
To start the New Year of right, I also set some fashion goals. I would like to experiment with bold colors and prints, and this 1960s daisy print frock is the perfect match. I fell in love with the pockets and detailing, and the shape was a particularly good fit. The odd looking ducks (or the duck/turkey hybrid?) joined Matthew and I as we took photographs. They sat patiently watching, and waddled away as we continued our walk around the lake. It was a perfect way to spend a very promising New Year.

Sweater Weather

My mother had a pretty impressive sweater collection when I was younger. She particularly loved animal-themed knits, and she would pair her jumpers with pencil skirts and pleats. While I wished she would have kept some of these sweaters for her now vintage-loving daughter, I still have a soft spot for kitschy 1970s/1980s pieces whenever I see them. This dusty rose number is my newest addition to my rather small sweater collection. I was particularly drawn to the detailed embroidery of the dancing woman and the large collar, with the stripes as an added bonus.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday! I've been sick since Friday, driving me to watch a constant stream of Netflix movies. 1980s crime dramas have been my favorite thus far.

Holiday Cheer

There is nothing better than spending the holidays with friends. These are a few snapshots from a very fancy holiday party that I hosted at my apartment a few weekends ago. With over 14 dozen homemade cookies and tasty treats, we sang Christmas carols and sipped on cocktails. I borrowed a few holiday decorations from my mom, many of which were my grandmothers from the 1950s and 1960s. I have a penchant for kitschy holiday items, and I couldn't have been happier with the metallic candle wreaths and holly cake decorations. I hope everyone had a very happy weekend!

Pinky (and the Brain)

When I found this little gem of a vintage coat at the thrift store I must admit that I gave a little squeal of delight. The vibrant hot pink color is what first caught my eye. Trying it on, I was then drawn to the darling cut and style of the coat. Upon closer inspection of the little geometric buttons and back detailing I just knew it had to be mine. Wearing such a fun, bright color helps combat the feelings that can come with the dreary winter weather of December.
I decided to wear my coat over another new addition to my closet, my pretty, silk T.B.A. dress. Purchased during the last Ladies Night at Mira Mira, it's fast becoming one of my favorite dresses in my closet. It has a great silhouette and how could you not love that sweet little collar? I added some ladylike accessories with bow detailing and had the perfect outfit for a holiday work party. I can't believe that tomorrow it will already be Christmas Eve. I'll be working but I hope everyone else has a wonderfully festive evening. Plaid and Fur

I must admit that I am rather a silent observer when it comes to the holiday season. Growing up, I celebrated both Chanukah and Christmas to honor the traditions of both my father and mother. And while I still celebrate both holidays with my family, I haven't had a Christmas tree since I was 11, and my menorah has sat neglected in my kitchen cabinet since college. Hoping to start a few traditions of our own, Matthew and I decided to embrace the good cheer this year. We went Christmas tree shopping earlier in the month, and we decorated our Douglas Fir with gold and red ornaments. My menorah is also set up in my living room, already lit to celebrate the first two nights of Chanukah.
Infusing a little holiday spirit in my wardrobe, I wore this lovely plaid dress with velvet detailing. As Winter approaches, my vintage furs make their way from storage into my closet. We both have a penchant for fancy dresses, many of which sit idly in our closets until holiday and birthday celebrations. This winter season, we've been inspired by 1960s films such as That Funny Feeling starring the lovely Sandra Dee. Mixing our love for 1960s party dresses and velvet, we've donned two additions to our wardrobe purchased from vintage clothiers in the Haight/Ashbury District of San Francisco. It's always a treat to wear a fancy dress to a holiday event, especially when paired with festive accessories.

Polkadot Pop

Matthew and I picked up our Christmas tree last week and the house is filled with the lovely holiday scent of pine and evergreen. Decorating the tree is one of my favorite traditions and this year was no different. We can't place any of our ornaments too low on the tree because, as we learned last year, they are just too tempting for little puppies to chew on. The same goes for Christmas presents...they can't sit under the tree if they want to survive.

This dress was actually a Christmas present from a couple years ago from Matthew's family. His mother knows just what I like! I love all the darling little polkadots on this dress and wanted to add some more pops of color with the green clutch and bright pink "flatforms". I'm terrible at walking for very long in high heels so these platforms are a great solution. I get the height I like without the danger to my ankles. Perhaps another pair is just the thing I need to add to my Christmas list.

Last Saturday, I hosted a holiday party at my apartment along with Ashley and Annalise. With garland and handmade wreaths delicately placed around the house, we sipped on spiced cider and gingerbread cookies with close friends. I really love hosting parties, mainly due to the planning and baking that precedes such events. There have been some minor accidents in parties past, such as my 1950s porcelain pink bathroom sink falling off the wall and shattering into a 1000 little pieces (free standing sinks are not seats for smooching sessions). Luckily, I avoided such catastrophes this year. And I got to put to use my 1960s bar cart, which usually sits neglected until holiday and birthday celebrations.
This 1960s babydoll watercolor dress is the first in our week long holiday dress series. I have quite a collection of fancy party dresses that come out only special occasions. It's rather funny that this party frock hasn't made its way on the blog since it is absolutely my favorite dress. The watercolor print, cut, and velvet bow make it a perfect holiday piece. Sunday Sounds: Ella Fitzgerald

If there is one record that it is frequently played at my apartment, it is Porgy & Bess, the 1957 collaboration between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Their recording of Gershwin's "Summertime" is arguably the best jazz vocal rendition of the song. With a vocal range spanning three octaves, she has one of the most distinctive voices in music. And as the weather gets a little colder, I find myself listening to Fitzgerald during evenings spent at home. Her voice is reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour, making it the perfect accompaniment for holiday parties and winter celebrations.

The weather has certainly taken a turn into colder territory here in San Francisco and it's time to pile on the layers. This sweater is one of my softest and coziest; perfect for bundling up over dresses or leggings. The skinny belt helps add a bit of shape to an oversized sweater like this one. Hummingbird Girls and Threadflip

Annalise and I have been collecting vintage for almost a decade, and we have bins of neglected items waiting to be connected with fellow enthusiasts. Last Sunday, we teamed up with Threadflip to photograph some of these treasures, all of which will be for sale on their site. Last Friday, we attended The Tarot Woman Boutique opening in Berkeley. We both have been longtime admirers of Janina's eye for unique vintage pieces. Her store is filled with carefully curated dresses, shoes, and accessories from the 1930s through the 1990s. We have a few of our higher end pieces for sale in the store as well, including a 1960s rose print jacket with a rabbit fur collar and a 1940s lace evening dress with rhinestone detailing. Cafe Dreams

Sometimes it's nice to wake up early, not because you have to but because you want to. It often happens that I'm sleepily on my way to work early in the morning, and I see people relaxing in cafes reading books or sipping warm drinks. I wish I could join them, but I don't of course. When I couldn't sleep this weekend, I decided to get up and make my early morning cafe dream a reality. I decided to wear my new A.P.C. silk polka-dot skirt and white vintage blouse. I just adore the detailing on the neckline of this top. I hope everyone had as nice of a weekend...mine sent me floating down the street in bliss.

Sunday Sounds: Phantogram

Phantogram is an American electronic rock band formed by two friends in Saratoga Springs, New York. Inspired by artists like The Cocteau Twins, David Bowie and John Frusciante, the band has been described as having a "street beat, psych sound". The two practice and write their songs in an even more remote area than where they live. 75 miles into the wilderness is their cabin, where they create experimental songs with trippy beats, spacey keyboards and airy vocals. The bleak yet breathtaking setting surrounding their studio comes through in their newest album, Nightlife, which just came out in November of this year. I'm still trying to decide which song is my new favorite.

I've noticed a few snowy scenes in some of my favorite blogs lately and as much as I like the look of snow, I'm reminded of how thankful I am of mellow California weather. In no time at all it will be boots and coats on a regular basis. San Francisco's weather is notoriously up and down, so the mornings are quite cold, as are the evenings, especially with the sun going down at 5pm! This isn't a color pallette I usually wear but something made me fall in love with the chartreuse color of this skirt paired with the deeper shades of navy and burgundy. The fabric covered buttons on the skirt are a lovely addition, as are the tassels on my shoes. One of my favorite things about vintage clothing are the subtle details that really make an outfit.

The dress is the perfect winter staple- a luxurious crushed velvet mini dress with detailing at the bodice. And I recently thrifted this navy boater beauty from a charity shop in Santa Rosa for a mere $10.00. The store is off the beaten path, and I generally find wonderful treasures hidden among piles of junk. This outfit reminds me a bit of an Edwardian schoolgirl, something that I am particularly happy about. My big toothy grin comes out for occasions like these, although it is partly fueled by the three cups of coffee I eagerly consumed before snapping these photos.

One of my favorite winter activities is making applesauce and canning it for later months. It's been nearly four years since I started this tradition with Matthew and his mother. With over 75 pounds of apples, we peel, core, and slice every last one. After the initial cutting, a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon are some of the special ingredients for its syrup, all of which are canned in an airtight mason jar. Pictured above are some of our finished products, all made with love! We canned over 70 jars this year, many of which will be handed out to friends and family during the holiday season.

It's only Tuesday and this has already become a very busy week, as this season is prone to do. The days leading up to the Winter Solstice holidays and the New Year are always packed with parties, friends and evenings of good cheer. I love seeing the lights start popping up around the city and twinkling trees in apartment windows. When I found this skirt at the thrift store I was immediately drawn to the gorgeous autumnal colors and pattern. I've heard it's a fashion faux pas to wear brown and black together, but this color combination is one of my favorites. I always wonder who creates these silly "fashion rules" anyways. Regardless of the import of this fashion bylaw, I still hear a little voice in the back of my head that reminds me of all of the "do's" and "don'ts" of the season. Throwing all caution to the wind, I wore my fanciest dusty rose floral fastener and my 1940s doctor bag out on Saturday. The magnifying glass necklace holds sentimental value as it was my grandmothers. She wore the necklace daily, and she would use it to read newspaper articles and books. The Stables

There is an area in Golden Gate park called the Polo Field that is a track and field surrounded by a small stadium and these old abandoned horse stables. The Golden Gate Park Stadium opened in 1906 and was first planned to be a 60,000 seat amphitheater. In 1967, the stadium was the site of the Human Be-In which launched the Summer of Love and where Timothy Leary urger fellow hippies to "tune in, turn on, and drop out". (So says Wikipedia).

The stables were a great place to show off this dress I received in a swap from Mousevox Vintage. (Check out how she styled it here.) I found this dress last weekend at Held Over in the Haight/Ashbury District of San Francisco. Held Over is my go-to store for vintage dresses in my neighborhood, and I always leave with an interesting piece to add to my wardrobe. When I first spotted this dress, I was a little bit weary about the bright floral pattern. But I quickly fell in love with the psychedelic dolly appeal of the frock, especially paired with the right accessories. Although I have a penchant for particular colors and prints, I think it is important to experiment with items outside of my usual fashion choices. When I wasn't working this weekend, I tried to spend as much time as I could outside. Matthew and I went to Golden Gate Park to walk around and enjoy the sunshine. This waterfall was the perfect place to stop and snap some photos. I guess a lot of other people had the same idea because we were never alone. It's a popular tourist destination, so there were a lot of cameras out as well. It can be so awkward to take photos when there are a lot of strangers around, so I just tried to pretend they couldn't see me.

Nestled in the hills of Presidio National Park, there's a cliff that overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge. When it isn't too foggy, Matthew and I travel to the cliff to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. It's an odd experience growing up in the Bay Area and living so close to historic sites such as the Golden Gate Bridge. I live a mere eight minutes from this spot, yet I often take for granted its beauty. It's difficult to imagine living far from the Pacific since so much of my childhood involved weekend trips to Bodega Bay and Stinson Beach. I look fondly on those lazy days spent lounging on the sand and eating barbecued oysters and clam chowder. This past weekend, Matthew and I put the finishing touches on my closet remodel. We reinforced my antique dresser, added shelving and baskets, and assembled shoe racks. I have been so busy lately with work that I haven't had much time for creative projects. It was a refreshing experience to paint shelving and organize all of my vintage goodies, many of which sat neglected in the corners of my closet for months. With all of the added space, Alfalfa and Lulu Rabbit have enjoyed running around the closet and nesting in my shoes. I just can't resist their little faces.

Just a few shots from my Thanksgiving celebration this year. Matthew and I went to Nik and Rocio's house for the fourth year in a row. Our buffet style anual dinner is something I always look forward to durring this busy time of year. Rocio had decorated the table with beautiful bright flowers and sunny yellow tablecloth, plus these napkins that I just loved. While the doggies played non-stop we sang Disney songs and feasted on salad, mashed potatoes, candied yams, macaroni and cheese, and so much more as well as the usual turkey and gravy for those who so choose. I'm thankful for many things but one of them is all of the lovely ladies who stop by and visit me on this blog. I've gotten to know some of you very well, and others I'm still meeting. Last Thursday, Annalise and I attended Ladies Night at Mira Mira, a lovely little boutique in the Mission District of San Francisco. The store is filled with treasures from several independent designers and offers a perfectly curated selection of ready-to-wear dresses. Annalise purchased a lovely TBA frock, and Ashley bought a dreamy polka dot dress from MyPetsQuare. After shopping, we met Isla for drinks and girl talk at the Lone Palm. We snapped a few pictures of the night with a cheap point-and-shoot from the corner store. It was such a wonderful night spent with some lovely ladies!

Slate & Fallen Leaves

The rainy weather has confined many of my activities to the comforts of my home. Instead of venturing out on Friday evening, Matthew and I experimented with some autumnal recipes. We cooked a butternut squash soup and a spaghetti squash carbonara, both of which were delicious. While I love cooking, Matthew is definitely the chef in this pair. I had no idea what a roux sauce was or what the term deglazing meant until I met him. Due to my rather rudimentary knowledge of cooking, I often let him direct the inner workings of the kitchen as I gladly help out as the "prep cook."
This blouse is one of my favorite pieces for the late Fall due to its intricate detailing and neckline. I purchased it at the San Francisco Vintage Expo this year, and I have enjoyed styling it with skirts and dresses. The Rosebuds are a band that formed in North Carolina the week they got married in 2001. After working and touring together for years as a couple they divorced in 2008, but have continued to create music. The Rosebud's newest album is Loud Planes Fly Low which came out in June of this year. With dream pop vocals and fun yet mellow beats this is a band I can listen to over and over. It's easy to loose yourself in the music as their voices intertwine in songs about love and loss.

I was so happy to find this brightly colored cape while thrifting a few weeks ago when I was visiting my parents in Santa Barbara. Sometimes vintage clothing, even at the thrift stores, can be so over priced. I was amazed to find this treasure in such good condition for less than ten dollars! The vibrant blues and greens are a much needed pop of color as the daylight hours get shorter in San Francisco. I've been working extra hard at my job getting ready for our holiday display install to be ready when the store opens the day after Thanksgiving. Since I start work so early in the morning and sometimes don't leave until the evening, there are days that I don't ever see the sunlight! I try to spend as much time as possible with my friends when I do have some free time. I also find it important to eat well and get lots of sleep. This weekend was relatively quiet, with most of it spent indoors catching up on neglected projects. I've been busy lately with work and graduate applications, and I never feel like there is enough time in the day to accomplish all of my goals. Most of my sewing projects are piled high in my closet corner and probably won't be finished until the new year. So much mending needs to be done!
Taking a break from writing, I spent a lovely Sunday evening indulging in oysters and champagne with Ashley. Although I've been a longtime fan of their albums, I recently saw The Sandwitches open for Architecture in Helsinki at The Fillmore. Their live performance was equally matched to the melancholic sound conveyed in their recordings. The Sandwitches mix 50s dowop with sprinkles of country-inspired melodies to create an eerie ambient sound. It's the perfect soundtrack for the darker days of Autumn. This is mainly because I no longer have to wake up for work while it is still pitch black outside. But it is also fueled by my love for coffee and early morning walks. I enjoy a casual morning stroll through the neighborhood, especially when I have a cup of coffee in hand. I can't start off the day without a very strong cup of joe because I am one serious coffee drinker. I don't know when this vice developed, but I don't see it leaving my life anytime soon.

As the cold weather creeps ever nearer, it's time to bring out the tights, boots and little wool skirts. I also wanted to share another textured leather bag from my collection. I really like the interesting color combination of this bag and the awesome buckle. The skirt is a long ago thrifted find that I somehow can't get rid of even if I only wear it once and a while. It has pockets, buttons up the front and is made from the best multi colored nubbly fabric. So cozy! Whenever I wear this color combination, I think of my dance teacher from elementary and high school. Everything she owned was red, black and white. Even her house was painted in this color scheme, and she had black hardwood floors imported from a special retailer in order to maintain her creative vision. While I have never considered myself a fan of red, I do love a pop of color in an outfit. This coat is once example, and I particularly like it due to its brass buttons and collar. Hope that everyone had a fun and safe Halloween. Jen and I went over to Isla's house for an epic party. I went as Poison Ivy and Jen looked as gorgeous as ever in her witch costume. Our lovely host Isla was the ever pouty Daria, Rachel as her own version of Mousevox, and Ashley was her future self (great idea!). The house looked amazing, and I was so impressed with all the creepy decorations. There was cobwebs, dancing, laughing and of course lots of photos. Enjoy!

Jet Plane

I generally don’t get very excited for television shows, but I have been thoroughly enjoying Pan Am. The combination of 1960s fashion and espionage makes for an intriguing storyline. While I don’t own a television (only a record player), full episodes are available through Hulu. If for nothing else, at least watch one episode for the set design. There are so many dreamy vintage frocks!

Maybe inspired a little bit by Pan Am, I wore some fancy items for an after work adventure. This 1950’s jewel tone dress and 1960s pillbox cocktail hat make the perfect pair for an early evening dinner at Bar Crudo in my neighborhood. Happy hour and $1.00 oysters made me one happy lady.

This weekend, Matthew and I traveled to Harbin Hot Springs to celebrate our four year anniversary. Harbin is tucked into a lovely canyon and features one of the oldest natural hot springs in Northern California. We both indulged in an hour long massage as well as a variety of treats from their cafe. This is our fifth visit to Harbin since 2007, and we are planning another trip in December to celebrate the winter solstice. While Matthew and I don't go on very many weekend getaways, I've found these short trips to be a much needed change of pace from the anxieties of work and school.
I wish I could say I was better prepared for Halloween, but all of my creative costume ideas were never brought to fruition. I instead dressed as my go-to costume in years past- a classic witch hat with a black velvet dress and boots. Sunday Sounds: Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was an American musician, singer, and actor who made records from the late 1950s until his death in 2000. He is most well known for his theatrical performance of songs like "I Put A Spell on You", my personal favorite. It's a Halloween playlist must have! The entire band was drunk during the recording of this song and Hawkins was so out of it that he blacked out and didn't remember the recording session. It gained attention for his screaming and guttural noises, and some radio stations even refused to play it because of the overt sexuality. The record label released a second version fo the single and removed most of the grunts that had embellished the original performance. Screamin' Jay Hawkins outfits included gold and leopard skin costumes and lots of voodoo stage props. I guess that would make him one of the original shock rockers.

So, I guess it's time to let the cat out of the bag, and I'm happy to. Have you guessed yet? On my birthday, exactly one week ago, I got the most wonderful gift...I got engaged! I don't know how I didn't see it coming since Matt had been planning it for a while. It was so romantic, sweet and thoughtful and I'm so happy to be with my best friend now and forever. After a lovely birthday dinner Matthew poped the question on top of Bernal Hill, the place where we went the first time we ever met. I laughed, and then I cried and then I laughed again. I couldn't be more excited. Now don't worry, this won't be turning into a bridal blog any time soon. But do I hope that you'll let me go all girly on you every now and then when I just can't hold it in anymore.
Matthew had the help of his brother, a gemologist who designed and had the ring made from a jeweler he knew named Chi. Chi started working with jewelry at the age of eight at the knees of his father and grandfather and all of the etching on the ring was hand done by Chi. The main diamond is from Matt's Godmother who lives on the east coast. I just love the story of how the ring was created and where the different stones came from (family, Israel and Sri Lanka). I really am the luckiest girl in the world!

While the school is located within an urban area, one of the things I appreciate most about the campus is its historic setting. The picteresque architecture emanates collegiate life. Ornate detail adorns classroom buildings, and the main library features an impressive rotunda. Even today, I could spend hours wandering through campus, admiring each unique detail. Feeling particularly scholarly, I styled this lovely dress from Tulle with a vintage tweed blazer and carpet bag. I have quite a little collection of black dresses in my closet due to their versatility. This dress will quickly become a favorite of mine for the colder months, especially because of its longer sleeves. Swiss Miss

This week, Jen and I received a lovely package from Tulle filled with some pretty things from the season. We both liked this black swiss dot dress that has a definite vintage flair. The bow neckline and slightly puffed sleeves are such sweet details to this classic dress. I can see this dress being an easy "go to" piece on colder mornings when I want to look nice but still need a longer sleeve. I don't have too many longer sleeve garments in my closet, but they are such a nice addition to an Autumn wardrobe. It's just perfect for wearing with tights and booties for a trip to a local cafe for hot cocoa and a good book, or maybe some people watching. And since I am the worst secret keeper, I am going to stop there. The secret will be revealed soon! A watercolor blouse and vintage owl necklace make this a perfect Autumn outfit in my book. I have been particularly attracted to browns for the season, and the vintage cylindrical purse is a new favorite. And I felt a little bit like an explorer with the brown hat. However, the only adventure I went on was a short trip for some Friday evening libations!

Sunday Sounds: Talking Heads

The Talking Heads were an American avant-garde band formed in 1974 in New York City. Due to their eclectic sound, I consider the Talking Heads to be one of the greatest artists of all time. While this is quite an arguable claim to make, frontman David Byrne's talent demonstrates his ability to combine elements of pop, rock, funk, world music, and Americana into seemingly effortless performances and albums. I find myself falling a little more in love with their albums as I grow older, especially due to their live performance (check some out via You Tube!) I would suggest listening to the track "Psycho Killer-" one of my favorites from their 1977 album. Any other Talking Heads fans?

Wardrobe

A little peek into some of my favorite items in my main wardrobe. Matthew is currently remodeling my 6 X6 walk-in closet for a much belated birthday present. He refinished the 1930s antique white dresser as well as repaired its broken drawers. The 1930s dressing mirror and early 1900s brush set are some of my most beloved possessions- I think they are quite fitting for the aesthetic. Next on the list is additional shelving, hat racks, and a shoe organizer. I couldn't be happier with the progress! Hopefully, I'll share photos when it's done (and there aren't piles of clothes and half-hung dresses hiding out of sight of the camera lens).

Happy Birthday to me! I'm the big two-nine today and so thrilled about it. Life has only gotten better the older I've gotten. I'm so much more confident in just being myself. I wish I could tell my younger self that things really do improve, and I don't need to worry so much about what will happen in the future. Matthew is working a short day so we can take our dog ZZ out on an epic walk to the beach. He also has a dinner planned at a secret restaurant. I'm so excited because I really feel like I remember a nice dinner more than I remember a random gift from a few years ago.

I've started to collect these type of textured, colorful bags from the 1980s. So far I have about 4 bags in my collection. They all have different color combinations and special details. I love the way that they can give a rather simple outfit the perfect punch of funkiness. And surprisingly they can be fairly easy to find at thrift stores. This lovely skirt is another recent thrift store find. I think the color is just perfect for fall and of course the fact that it had pockets was a total bonus. My new hair cut and color is all thanks to Corinne at Estila salon. I feel like it was just what I needed to start off my birthday week.

This weekend was relatively quiet, a much needed respite from my usual days filled with work, writing, and projects. The colder weather brings with it a hibernation of sorts. I am much happier staying in and cooking with Matthew than late evenings galavanting around San Francisco. A good book and a cup of tea are much more desirable than 2 AM adventures.
Black and autumnal florals have been a staple in my wardrobe this season. The vibrant colors of this reconstructed skirt is quite fitting for this transitional period, especially paired with rich brown hues. I also ventured into experimentation with lipstick. I must admit I am not one for wearing too much makeup. Sunday Sounds: Patti Smith

I recently read the book "Just Kids" by singer-songwriter and artist Patti Smith. Her life was so interesting and she writes about it in a way that is as beautiful as her poetry and song lyrics. Her most well known song, "Because The Night", was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and always gives me chills every time I listen to it. The 1975 album "Horses" put her on the map durring the New York punk rock movement. I love how her slightly throaty voice is the perfect thing to listen to as a dark lullaby.

On Saturday Jen, Isla and I embarked on an epic thrifting adventure far from the confines of the city. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and drove for hours until we reached what we like to call "The Mother Ship". It was a beautiful drive and an equally beautiful destination, especially if you love thrift stores as much as we do. After searching through racks and bins to find our treasures, we went on another type of hunt- the hunt for a Subway sandwich shop. Nothing has ever tasted better!
At one of our many stops of the day, there was a lovely little moss covered wall. I just had to stop and snap some photos before getting on our way. I'm so lucky to have such darling friends to join me on day trips such as these. This dream catcher necklace is one of my newest pieces from Dear Mina. I had been wanting one since I saw it on her site. I finally got my hands on my very own! I love the way it pops against the dark green velvet of the dress. Velvet is fast becoming a staple fabric in my fall wardrobe. It's cozy, luxurious and I just can't get enough. San Pedro de Atitlán

During the summer of 2010, Matthew and I traveled Guatemala and Honduras. Our reasons for visiting Latin America were rooted in familial and childhood experiences. My mother's family is Honduran, and Matthew lived in Guatemala for six months following the civil war that ended in the late 1990s. While Latin America is known for textiles, Guatemala boasts some of the most impressive artisan wares. I purchased this backpack in San Pedro, a small town bordering Lago de Atitlán. The material is handwoven by local women, and the leather is imported from master artisans in surrounding villages. Into the Woods

Walking amongst the fallen leaves is one of my favorite things to do in the fall. I love hearing the birds chirping, smelling the damp earth and feeling it get colder as the sun nears the horizon. On this particular walk I was delighted to see many squirrels busily scampering up and down tree trunks, presumably collecting nuts for the coming winter months. The sunlight filtering in through the tree branches was just enchanting and I never wanted to leave. Until I noticed all the naughty little mosquitos that is!

To me, rainstorms in San Francisco are synonymous with bright umbrellas. While I have a small collection of 1940s parasols that are often too fragile to use, this umbrella can withstand the harshest windstorm or downpour. I am glad it has survived nearly 60 years of use so I can tote it around with me during blustery Fall weather.
As much as I love the rain, I am hoping for blue skies over the weekend. Annalise and I will embark on a thrifting adventure in Northern California early Saturday morning. We are on the hunt for warm coats and dresses for the new season at some of our favorite thrifting havens. And perhaps I will find a pair of rain boots for my closet. One of the wonderful things about living in San Francisco is being surrounded by historical buildings and monuments. I especially love the beautiful Victorian houses with all of the intricate details and vibrant colors. During The Summer of Love, thousands of young people came to the Haight Ashbury district which resulted in a cultural and political revolution. Artists, hippies, students, druggies and musicians all descended upon the neighborhood. Just one block up from the intersection of Haight and Ashbury is a "Queen Anne" style house that was built in the 1890s. It was the communal home and headquarters of the "Grateful Dead" between October 1966 and 1968. While taking these photos, many tourists came and also took pictures in front of the iconic home. It's great to be reminded that I live in a city that inspires people come and visit from all over the world and they enjoy spending a little time in the place I get to call my home.

I must admit I have a fondest for outerwear. This 1960s crushed red velvet peacoat may be my favorite due to its brass buttons, dainty pockets, and statement collar. I purchased the coat at Held Over in the Haight/Ashbury district last Fall before an impromptu trip to New York City. The coat definitely kept me warm in the brisk NYC Autumn weather, and it is just the right amount of coverage for a mild San Francisco winter. The coat is the perfect match to this dreamy 1970s number. Originally a maxi dress, I found it buried deep within a pile of clothes at a thrift store. As much as I love a longer hem line, I have been loving shorter lengths for the Fall. Sunday Sounds: Nick Cave

I've been in love with Nick Cave since I first heard his music nearly a decade ago. Originally from Austraila, he has been playing music since the early 1970s. My favorite period of Cage is his stint as front man for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. His sound is an eclectic mix of country, blues, punk and gospel with lyrics that span love, death, religion and violence. One of my favorite albums- The Murder Ballads- discusses violence and death in some of the most beautiful ways I've ever heard. Check out the video at the end of this post. It's a disturbing yet eerily lovely duet with pop star Kylie Minogue. I hope I can introduce just one person to his incredible talent.

If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you may know that Annalise and I have a shared affinity for Stevie Nicks. There have been many days filled with Fleetwood Mac sing-a-longs, particularly anything from the Rumors album. As the weather transitions to colder temperatures, her signature style of black, velvet, and fringe slowly make their way into both of our wardrobes. This week was no exception, filled to the brim Ms. Nick's fashion inspiration. While I don't envision myself in a floor length chiffon dress complete with a feathered top hat as Stevie might don, I do see myself wearing more black lace and leather boots. And if everything works out as planned, I will be in full Stevie regalia for Halloween. Cape, chiffon, lace, boots, and a tambourine in hand.

This little fringe shall is the easiest thing to throw on over a t-shirt and skinny denim for a simple but cute outfit. For some reason my clock alarm didn't go off in the morning and I woke up with the light of dawn shining in through my window. I usually get up a little after my alarm goes off at 5am (terrible, I know) and I am at work at 7am. Now, just imagine waking up 10 minutes after you're supposed to leave the house. Obviously I scrambled around the apartment looking for something to throw on and still get to work on time. I always think that jewelry and accessories can add so much to an otherwise boring outfit, so I added some of my newest pieces from Dear Mina.
I also wanted to let you know that Hummingbird Vintage will be teaming up with A Fine Day for Sailing and selling some awesome clothes from our closets and shops at the RVCA flea market on Saturday on upper Haight Street from 11am until 4pm. We hope to see you there!

To signal a change from the warmer months to a time of quiet and hibernation, we recently celebrated the Autumnal Equinox. Last Saturday evening consisted of a Fall feast featuring butternut squash, roasted salmon, apple tarts, and red wine. The night ended with a campfire to mark the beginning of the season as well as a time of change.
With the colder weather, warmer clothes are slowly making their way into my everyday dressing. To me, San Francisco Fall means black dresses, wool capes, hats, and umbrellas. I found this cape (for only $4.00) in a tiny town in Northern Michigan during a summer weekend trip. Its heavy wool fabric and hood make it an Autumn staple. As fall weather creeps in closer and closer I find myself reaching for the warm and cozy clothes in my closet. This awesome cocoon coat I've had for a few years after picking it up at an epic Urban Outfitters sale for only $5. It's got a nice big neckline, deep pockets and a chunky knit. The perfect thing to keep we warm on a rainy Sunday when Ashley, Jen and I ventured out to the Alemany Flea Market and then to Mission Cheese for brunch.
The velvet skirt takes me back to my grungier gothic days. Add with it a simple lace top, tights and boots and you're set. I used to carry my pet rat, MiseryWinter, around town with me, hiding in the sleeves of my jacket or sitting on my shoulder. I know that rats are not everyones cup of tea, but my little lady was such a sweetheart and was super smart too.
